These critters we chase have an amazing sense of smell and it doesn't matter if it's a deer, elk or coyote. This natural ability of theirs is far better than ours which makes it critical for us to out think their nose. Let's face it, we have all been winded by an animal we were chasing at one time or another. All that work scouting, preparing and dreaming for that moment all blown by that doe who just picked off our odor. You've been there! Well, hopefully we have some tips that might help out to prevent that heart sinking moment. Let's look at your boots, clothing, body odor, your gear and the wind.Boots
How many times have you put gas in your truck and then wore those same boots into the field? We pick up odors all over the place that are not natural to the wild game we chase. A good practice is to store your boots in a scent free air tight container. Put them on in the field and take them off in the field. A good scent elimination spray or powder is also helpful.Clothing
This is one of the easiest steps to take. Wash all of your clothes both camo and casual clothes with scent free detergent. Change your clothes in the field before and after your hunt. To wear casual clothes that carry a detergent odor and change to scent free camo doesn't work. Do your best to eliminate any chance of picking up odors. Store all camo in scent free containers or bags. Scent eliminating sprays are also very helpful. One trick I learned, a long time ago, was to put local vegetation (to your hunting area) in a scent free pillow case. Place this in the dryer to help disperse a natural scent into your clothing. Carbon suits have become very popular and are also very helpful. Whatever you do just pay very close attention to your clothing.Body Odor
Always shower in scent free soap before going into the field. There are a large number of products to help with body odor such as scent free deodorant, gum, body wipes, shampoo, foot powder and sprays. Remember after you shower that the towel you dry with needs to be scent free.Your Gear
All of your gear will probably have foreign odors. During your practice sessions you have collected a variety of odors. Clean everything thoroughly with scent eliminating wipes or wash it with scent eliminating soap. All of these little steps can add up to make a big difference.Wind Direction
All of these steps will increase your odds but nothing is 100%. Always watch and be careful of the wind direction. The wind often changes in both intensity and direction. Always put the wind in your favor. We hope these tips will help you on your next hunt.
Good luck and FOOL THE DOE!!!!
